A flood outlook has been issued for local watersheds in Northumberland and Quinte as a series of storm systems are expected to bring significant precipitation to the region this weekend.
Starting Friday evening and continuing into Monday morning, the area is forecast to receive 20 to 40 millimetres of mostly freezing rain, with some rain and snow possible. Temperatures are expected to remain near the freezing mark for much of the weekend but could climb above 10 degrees Celsius by early next week.
Authorities warn that these conditions could cause water levels to rise quickly. While most snowpack south of Highway 7 has already melted, approximately 45 millimetres of water remains stored in the snowpack further north. Combined with wet soil conditions, the forecasted precipitation could result in faster-than-usual water level increases in lakes and watercourses.
“If the system produces mostly rain instead of freezing rain or snow, water levels could reach bankfull conditions by midweek,” officials warn. Additional rainfall expected later in the week could push water levels even higher.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas are advised to monitor conditions closely and take steps to protect their property. Homeowners are encouraged to check that sump pumps are working, ensure ditches and storm drains are clear, and have a backup generator and pump on hand if needed.
This flood outlook will remain in effect until April 11, 2025, unless conditions change.
